Task 1 - Purpose of Music Videos

A music video is a short video or film that is accompanied by a completed piece of music which is usually created by a music artist or band. The term “music video” first emerging into popular usage in the early 1980’s, prior to this, they were usually described using a variety of terms such as “film clip” and “promo clip”. Although the actual origins of music videos go much further back than the 1980’s, in 1981, MTV, a music television channel launched airing “Video Killed The Radio Star” and thus began an era of 24-hour-a-day music on television.

With MTV being the new outlet the music video began to grow and by the mid-80’s begin to play a big role in the promotion of music and as such one of the main modern uses for music videos is to promote the music, and the artist. By using a music video, it creates a memorable visual on the viewer as well as invoking some sort of reaction which will leave the listener remembering the song, and therefore it will increase sales of the song. Aswell as this, music videos also

Another particular purpose of the music video is to help enhance the career of the artist/band as it allows a chance to showcase a particular artist/band's talents e.g dancing and also helps to create a certain image for that particular band or artist therefore helping to attract an "target audience" per say, whom will like the artist/band's music/music videos and therefore buy CD's etc from them. Also, if a particular music video were to be very successful and gain alot of mainstream coverage, it would help to raise the profile of the artist/s and in turn the popularity of the artist/s increases and so do the sales of there albums.
